NIS has been established in 1963 by a Governmental Decree under the Ministry of Scientific Research. The principle functions of NIS are the maintenance of national primary standards providing technical leadership and advice upon request to industry and other sectors in problems related to measurements and calibration of high precision measuring devices for scientific,

medical, legal metrology, Industrial and technological laboratories .Within Arab Republic of Egypt, NIS is responsible for operating     the National Measurement System and providing the national standards of measu-rement. part of its work is concerned with the practical realization of the Systems of Units ( SI ) and the derived units .
